With the recent hot weather, it can be tempting to cool off in local lakes, ponds and waterways. However, swimming in open water can be extremely dangerous.
Even on warm days, water in lakes and rivers remains very cold. This can cause cold water shock, leading to gasping, panic and loss of swimming ability within seconds.
There are also other hidden dangers:
- Strong currents and deep, uneven water
- Hidden debris or sudden drops
- Slippery banks making it hard to get out
- Poor water quality that can cause illness
Recent warnings across the UK highlight that many incidents happen during warm weather when people underestimate the risks.
Please remember:
- Do not swim in local lakes, drainage ponds or rivers unless it is a designated, supervised area
- Follow all local signage and safety warnings
- Never jump or dive into unknown water
- Avoid water if you are alone or under the influence of alcohol
If you get into trouble: stay calm, float on your back, and call for help.
Enjoy the sunshine safely — please respect the water and help keep Hampton safe.
